I think that the fact that Mat doesn't want to think about Rand because of the colors is an indication that the two are meant to be apart. Until the end of the last book, Mat had yet to find and marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons. According to prophecy, Rand was going to bind the Nine Moons to him, which will be a lot easier to do if Mat is married to her. I think the colors were swirling to keep Mat from returning to Rand to early (after all, it is hard to think about getting back in touch with a guy when irritating colors swirl through your head every time you think about him). Just a thought

I like that. I hadn't thought about that, although, I never agreed that this meant they should get together. Imagine if they were all together...it would be kind of hard not to think about the other two. Maybe you are right, maybe they should stay away, but I guess that interpretation deals with the source of those colors. Are we assuming that the colors are controlled by the Pattern?

I don't think the colours are controlled, just a static effect that comes into play under the correct conditions. While I originally agreed with the theory that these colours are the Pattern prompting the three to do something (come together, stay apart, whatever) I now don't see it - every other time the Pattern appears to have done its work, there were no fireworks around to highlight it (well, except perhaps when Rand blew up the Illuminators' Chapter House for a disguised Lanfear...). I support the theory that the colours are because of some stress in the Pattern, possibly due to the world-shaking consequences of the actions all three are making.

But, who is to say the colors will occur when the tri-pod is together? There is actually no indictation either way, but my money is on there being no colors when the two/three of them are together. Whenever the colors start to swirl, it is trying to show whoever is viewing the colors when the other one is doing. If they are together, they will know what is going on and won't need the colors to swirl. I think it is an early warning device of somekind. The pattern is using this to let the three of them know that BIG trouble is on the horizon, and trying to tell them that they need to be reunited soon.

Going out on a limb, since that event was so important the colors made almost viewable pictures (in Perrin's case he could see it perfectly for a second), odds are any color swirling are around semi-important events that occur.
