A Case for Olver NOT being Gaidal Cain

📁 Is Olver Gaidal Cain? 👤 Moksha 📅 2001-05-16 💬 2 replies
Strange that a series so bound to the theme of Time and Sequence, is so vague when it comes to tracking the time elapsed for us in the books. That said, if we look back to the battle at Falme, when Mat sounds the Horn of Valere, all the Heroes of the Ages come back to fight, and I remember quite well that Gaidal Cain was among them. Unless several years (nearly 4-5 years I'd guesstimate, due to the fact that the boy is learning to read, noticing women, etc.) passed between Mat sounding the horn, and Olver becoming a character known to us, there is no 'logical' way he could be Gaidal Cain because he would have already been born, spun out into the pattern again, and therefore unable to answer the call of the Horn.

Exactly. It doesn't make sense. He was there so how does he become Olver. Has he been born, yes, Birgitte tells us so. Will they meet up, sure, the Pattern can fix what happened, which brings up the question, will Birgitte die before the end of the series?

Nyneave meets gaidel cain in the dream before he is spun out(warning birgitte not to help nyneave). This takes place when in 998 I think. He is spun out into the world within a short time after this event. Assuming dream time always goes in the same direction relative to real time and not backwards, it does not matter the time scale because gaidel would have to have been born at a time greater than or equal to 998. Making him at present 1-3 years old. At the time we met olver, he was probably still an infant.

That being said, I see other possibilities. Perhaps the souls dont reside in T'A'R, but instead somewhere else where the rules of time are different, only visiting the World of Dreams.

Another possibility, time can go backwards in T'A'R. Probably impossible because think of the possibilities.

Or, I actually give the two soul idea some weight. That maybe the soul that is spun out is not the same soul that resides in T'A'R. The reason I give this weight is because of the heroes of the horn. He must be there when called by the horn, so how can he be called if hes going to be a baby still when the last battle goes down. Of course this means that Birgitte is going to show at the last battle twice, if she doesn't die beforehand. Also I do remember Birgitte saying this was probably her last life she can be spun into because of the way she was extracted from T'A'R.

Another reason: Gaidel got forced out of T'A'R himself and thus became olver. Maybe he made up that thing about his parents dying. Maybe hes secretly hiding that he has all his past life memories. Would be an interesting twist, but almost certainly impossible. Interesting to note that he does play snakes and foxes and gave the necessary clues. Just from the questions he asks mat though, he doesn't seem to be a fully adult brain in a kids body.

The final most likely possibility: The wheel has adjusted things for birgitte's benefit. The wheel seems to resist change, it looks like it spins no matter what. Maybe It spat gaidel's soul into the body of a boy who had recently suffered the loss of his daddy at the hands of some shaidos, So that he may be just old enough to provide his skills in time for the last battle.
