Ok, I finally got around to looking it up. The stedding/channeling incident occurs in chapter 36 of The Great Hunt. Just forbackground, this is after Padan Fain has stolen the horn the second time and set machin shin to guarding the waygate at Carhein. So they go to the stedding and must address the stump to get permission to use the gate there. So they go _into_ the stedding, through the town and to the stump. The elders bring out theogier that was lost in the ways and ask Verin if she will "touch him." She looks at him for a moment and then places her hands on his chest, at which point she draws back with a hiss and says that there is nothing there, he is empty, etc. Now, it doesn't state right out that she channels, but it is similar enough to descriptions of healing to make you wonder. Then they all decide they still need to use the ways, so one of the elders guides them to it. Back through the city and out of the stedding, which is indicated when Rand realizes he can sense saidin again. So there is no doubt that they are in the stedding when the incident occurs, the only question is did Verin channel? The books wouldn't have said "so Verin embraced the source and channeled a flow into him" because this piece was told from Rand's point of view. But Verin didn't realize that "nothing was there" until _after_ she touched him, not when she looked at him, which to me indicates channeling. If this is the case, then she is black ajah because she would have had to embrace the true power from the DO to channel.

1998-07-29 Devils advocate : It depends on what she felt, the idea presented is that the Ogier has no soul, therefore would he be 'cold, clammy and was his heart beating?' I know, it sounds implausible, but she does feel his chest right? Obviously RJ meant to mystify Verin's character even more here. Thanks Malleus for the exact reference.

1998-09-07 Aes Sedae have other senses even when they are not channeling the OP. They can sense shadowspawn and the taint of the DO, foretell weather, and even sense the evil of Shadar Logoth. An Aes Sedai may even be able to sense some things about a person's health without channeling, as Verin did. She would not necessarily have had to channel.

1998-09-14 Ah, trying to play Devil's advocate. Yes, the ogier had a heart- beat, and he probably wasn't cold and clammy. How do I know this? Because he was alive. I don't remember exactly if they said he could eat when food was placed in his mouth, but it sounds right. Also, he would walk when someone would guide him. One of the ogier girls with him had to whipe drool from the corner of his mouth. He seems to have all basic lifefunctions. He seems to be perfectly healthy except "there is nothingthere." Would make a great X-File, wouldn't it?

1998-09-16 Alot of people cited Verin using the true power in a stedding and therefore being black ajah. people want the passage to see for themselves. The Great Hunt pg. 515. The group wants to use the ways to get to Falme but the ogier say no. they bring Rraynal and ask verin to inspect him. She lays her hand on his chest, gasps, and says she sences no soul. Did she use the true power? or was the lack of soul something easily felt like the hate of the ways?
