📁 The Trolloc Attack 👤 ReDragon 📅 2007-10-02 💬 0 replies
This is my theory on who sent the trollos to attack Lord Algains manor house in KoD chapter Vows.

It also includes questions on how many trollocs were actually sent, and what killed the most of them.

This theory started as a response to a thread on the message boards called "Trollocs" by Strongman34

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With fewer than twenty Aes Sedai, fewer than a dozen Asha'man, and maybe a hundred thousand Trollocs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the aftermath of the battle and the clean up operation.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where did we send those Trollocs? I just copied your weave exactly." "It doesn't matter where they went," Rand said absently. His attention was focused on Lews Therin. The madman, the bloody voice in his head, drew a little deeper on the Power. Let go, man. "Shadowspawn can't survive passing through a gateway."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This implies that there were a lot more trollocs than the 100 000 suggested, especially if the Death Gates were the major cause of the Light winning the battle.

Personally I believe that the blossoms of fire were the biggest killer.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

each red shaft expanded in a heartbeat to a disc of flame thirty feet across. Horned heads and snouted heads flew into the air, and pinwheeling arms, booted legs and legs that ended in paws or hooves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now those (Blossoms of Fire) also would have either burned to ash the trollocs caught at the center, and the parts pinnwheeling away could be used to estimate a count, but it also implies that the 100 000 is a conservative estimate in my opinion.

Also

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blossoms of Fire appeared that were not his weaving, and Deathgates, slightly smaller than Lews Therin's, and Arrows of Fire that must have been Logain's. The other Asha'man were paying attention, but few would be where they could see those last two webs spun.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So how many trollocs were either atomised, or DGed to other locations in Randland? How many were actually sent? to me 150 - 200 thousand seems more resaonable.

also another question, how many trollocs can a single fade control? there were 100 fades in the attack so my opinion is that the number must be at least 1000 each, but we've never seen that many trollocs controlled by so few fades. Was whoever sent them watching? To see what the forces of the Light could do? Gageing the reaction of the forces of the Light, how strong Rand and / if he had any other channerlers how likely a direct assault on the manor house by whoever sent them would be to succed, though I don't think any of the FS would attack Rand head on, though if they thought the fight would weaken him enough it may be a possibility.

So heres my thoughs on who sent them.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nevertheless, Sammael, or someone disguised as him, gave orders to Myrddraal, and they obeyed, so it was one of the Chosen."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moridin at the FS coffee hour.

Now out of the FS who were left - Dem, Mor , Gra, Sem, Cyn , Mog, Mes, Aran. Who's the likely suspect?

Mog and Cyn as well as Mor can be excluded I think cause Mor wouldn't let them because he has instructions

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moridin grunted sourly. "Pass orders to your Friends of the Dark. Any report of Trollocs or Myrddraal outside the Blight is to be handed to me as soon as you receive it. The Time of Return is coming soon. No one is allowed to go adventuring on their own any longer." He studied them again, each in turn save for Moghedien and Cyndane. With a smile even more languorous than Graendal's, Aran'gar met his gaze. Mesaana shrank back from it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mes has been punished and broken slightly by SH, so shes likely to obey orders at the moment.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mesaana also wore the style of this Age, a darker, pattern-embroidered bronze. She appeared wan and subdued, for some reason, almost as if she had taken ill.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While not a military commander in the field during the war, Graendal apparently was responsible for a number of significant gains and for a variety of successful subversion efforts. One source says: ?Graendal conquered territories as surely as any of the Shadow?s generals, but her battlegrounds were her enemies? minds.?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not an open warfare persona IMO Not Gra

This leaves Dem or Sem.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the war she held several field commands, proving herself a general of only average abilities

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I discount Sem, she was a healer, a breaker of people, and not a warfare persona. Also she was busy with Suroth, and plunging Seanchan into chaos by "destroying" the court of the nine moons.

Aran (Balthamel)

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without doubt he never held a field command, though it is possible that he did serve as a governor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not an open warfare persona. Not Aran, beside, He/she is more interested in Egwene.

This leaves us with Dem.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the beginning of the War of Power, Barid Bel quickly became one of the leading, and highest ranking, generals in the fight against the Shadow. In a world that had no memory of war and no military, generals had to be created, and the ability to lead in war was found in many places it might not have been suspected. Barid Bel had strategic vision and a tactical flair. At last he had found an area where he could, if not surpass, at least match Lews Therin. There is reason to believe that Barid Bel thought himself intellectually far superior to Lews Therin, believing him to be an overcautious fool militarily, while he himself was a gambler, willing to play the odds. As a result he was furious when Lews Therin was appointed over him to command the forces opposing the Shadow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"That sounds like Sammael," Demandred said thoughtfully, twisting his goblet and studying the swirling wine. "Perhaps I was mistaken." A remarkable admission, coming from him. Or an attempt to hide being the one who had worn Sammael as a disguise. She would like very much to know who had begun playing her own game. Or whether Sammael really was alive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So Dem was a gambler, he may be gambleing that Mor will never find out he put on Sammaels face to order the fades, or back to the watching and guageing thought. He may have watched, hopeing to strike against his hated enemy LTT while weakened, this is tatics a general may have used. Attack with a huge force, than a surgical strike with the elite units.

Now the thought that Sammael may still be alive, the same thoughts about dem apply here

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of his most trusted generals, including the favored Tel Janin Aellinsar and Barid Bel Medar, betrayed him to join the Dark, using their considerable talents and strengths against him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tel Janin Aellinsar (Sammael)

So the whole operation may have been a scouting party, just to guage intentions, strengths, weaknesses, or any other thing I haven't thought of. Because one of the maxims of war is

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not your enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sun Tzu "The Art of War"

Therefore, IMO either Dem or Sam if hes still alive sent the trollocs. He may have been watching from the shadows / treeline, hopeing to attack Rand after the battle, but seeing how many channerlers were around, decieded discretion is the better part of valour.

So thats my 2 cents (or five dollars, sorry this was so large)on who sent them, and that there were more than 100 000 trollocs.
